As the calendar year shifted from 2020 to 2021, I found myself reflecting on the words of the prophet Micah.
He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? -- Micah 6:8 (NRSV)
While times change, the wisdom of the Divine stays the same. While these words were spoken centuries ago, they still hold truth for us today.
The year 2020 was a deeply challenging year. The COVID-19 pandemic led to widespread, early loss of life and greatly hindered our ability to be together and express our care for each other. Racist police brutality showed us again how structured white supremacy emboldens hate and violence. Partisan politics led to an assault on the capital, rifts in our democracy and reduced trust in our government’s commitment to the common good. An overheated planet resulted in huge, frightening storms and widespread destruction of homes, livelihoods, and communities across the globe.
In one way or another, all of these hardships are associated with injustice. Through our blindness, and sometimes with intent, we treat the earth and its inhabitants with less dignity and respect than they deserve. Without recognizing the indwelling of the Divine in all of life, we continue to create harm and perpetuate injustice.
This scripture passage gives us a lens through which we can improve ourselves and our world. In order to restore public health, create racial equality, restore trust in government, and cool the planet, we need to create just systems that cultivate kindness.
We can accomplish these enormous tasks by journeying with the Divine, individually and corporately. By coming to a place of humility, allowing ourselves to know the heart of God, and living in accordance with God's unconditional love, we can help make 2021 a year of peace and joy.

Divine Spirit,
Deep in our hearts we know what is good. In our best moments, we remember that we are called to be instruments of your love. Help us to overcome our personal and corporate fears that limit our compassion and inhibit our creativity. Show us again what is good and help us to create it together.
